Samarkand recently made history by becoming the first municipality in Uzbekistan to join the EBRD's "Green Cities" program. According to reports from the annual shareholders meeting of the EBRD in Samarkand, a long-term sovereign loan of up to $49mn will be granted to SamarqandYo'lovchiTran, a state-owned enterprise responsible for operating a new bus fleet.
The funds will be spent on acquiring up to 100 medium-sized electric buses, chargers, and necessary infrastructure. The project will also receive a technical cooperation grant from the Government of Japan through the Japan-EBRD Cooperation Fund.
The "Green Cities" program is active in Kazakhstan. Daryo correspondent spoke with First Deputy Akim of East Kazakhstan Region for Economy and Finance Almashaan Smatlaev, who noted that 'the implementation process took around nine months or more and involved a lot of documentation preparation and legislative hurdles'.
