Maksat Babayev was appointed head of Turkmengaz, Central Asia's largest natural gas exporter, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports on May 13. Turkmenistan's president signed a decree to this effect.
The former head of this agency, Batyr Amanov, was appointed Deputy Prime Minister to oversee the local's oil and gas industry.
Turkmenistan has the world's fourth-largest reserves of natural gas. Its primary customer is China, which wants to increase its yearly purchases to 65bn cubic meters of gas from the current 40bn.
Babayev previously supervised the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project in a special capacity and represented his country at the Energy Charter Conference.
Since 2011, Ashgabat has been discussing the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline project with the European Union and interested countries, Turkiye and Azerbaijan, which Caspian neighbors Russia and Iran oppose.
