Turkey's presidential election appeared on Sunday, May 14. At 5:00 p.m. polling stations were closed, with votes now being counted both inside the country and abroad.
According to the” Anadolu " Agency, almost 60% of the votes were counted. The current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is currently leading the presidential race. More than 15 mn people (51.64 %) voted for him.
Opposition candidate Kamal Sabirdaroğlu is 9% behind Erdoğan with more than 12 mn votes (42.53 %). Sinan Ogan of the Union of Ataturkists is gaining just over 5% of the vote.
If neither men secure 50%, there will be a second poll on May 28.
According to the Central Election Commission of Turkey, a new record of voter participation has been set in the history of Turkey with 93.6 %. The outcome of the election remains to be seen in upcoming hours.
