The opposition candidate of the Alliance of Six Opposition Parties (People's Alliance), Kemal Kilicdaroglu, stated that Turkey desperately needs democracy and that it would arrive soon, Kilicdaroglu states while voting in Turkey's presidential and legislative elections.
"We all miss democracy, being together. You will see that spring will soon arrive in this nation." - he said. The presidential election is primarily between current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and opposition member Mevlut Cavusoglu, with Sinan Ogan of the "Union of Ataturkists" also participating.
To be elected as president, one must receive over 50% of the votes cast, and the prospect of having presidential elections in two rounds remains an option. The second round may be conducted on May 28, with the candidate receiving the most votes being proclaimed the victor.
Furthermore, 36 parties are running in the legislative elections, with some joining partnerships in order to reach the 7% threshold necessary to join the parliament.
