Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that the UN has sent a "road map" to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding the "grain agreement". The document portrays Turkey's mediation in payments for Russian agricultural products. According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received similar "maps".
"The road map includes various proposals to extend the grain contract, including the export of Russian ammonia from the port of Odesa and cooperation with Turkey on the issue of payment," Chavushoglu said in an interview with TRT Haber.
According to the minister, the road maps were sent to the leaders of the countries by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The grain agreement of the parties expires on May 18. In order to extend the contract, Russia must resume the supply of agricultural machinery to the country, remove restrictions on insurance and bans on access to ports, restore the operation of the Tolyatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline, and demands to reconnect "Rosselkhozbank" to the SWIFT international money transfer system to pay for Russian grain. On April 28, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that the prospects for extending the agreement were "not very good."
In turn, the European Union believes that the consequences of not extending the grain agreement with Russia will be disastrous. The foreign ministers of the G7 countries also emphasized that the grain agreement is very important, and Russia should not limit its term.
The grain agreement between Russia and Ukraine was signed on July 22, 2022, after continuous negotiations with the help of the UN and Turkey.
