The European Union is considering imposing export restrictions on countries that re-export products that have been sanctioned for Russia, Financial Times reports.
European Commission has studied a legal mechanism that enables limiting the sale of a small range of goods to certain third countries. The aim is to close the loopholes that allowed sanctioned products to enter Russia and support the country's war effort.
EU will first establish a legal framework to identify non-compliant products and countries without disclosing their names. After these countries are properly informed, Brussels can add product and country names to the export controls
Sources familiar with the situation say that this idea was discussed between the European Commission and senior diplomats of the European Union when the 11th package of sanctions against Russia was being prepared. However, some EU member states are concerned that such restrictions could have adverse effects on their relations with third countries.
The proposal will be discussed by the EU next week.
