President of the European Council Charles Michel has offered to organise a meeting with Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov in Brussels (Belgium) this year to discuss prospects for cooperation.
He said this at the ceremony of presentation of letters of credentials from Sapar Palvanov as permanent representative of Turkmenistan to the European Union.
The European diplomat noted the importance of contacts at the highest level and offered to organise a meeting with the head of state in Brussels this year to discuss the prospects for stepping up cooperation, a press release from the Turkmen diplomatic mission in Belgium said.
Michel also noted the respect of the European Union for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Turkmenistan.
Economic issues such as trade, energy, transport projects, climate change, and cooperation in the digital economy were discussed at the meeting.
The EU hopes to receive Turkmen gas via the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, and Türkiye. However, the European Parliament has not yet ratified the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) with Turkmenistan, so bilateral ties have been governed by an Interim Trade Agreement for about a decade.
In 2019, an EU delegation office opened in Ashgabat to take relations with Turkmenistan to a qualitatively higher level.
