Under land 42km from Mashhad in Iran, 152km from the Turkmen border (Kaahka settlement), a shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake occurred deep on the night of Friday, April 28, 2023, EarthquakeList reports.
The quake originated at a very shallow depth of 10km. Shallow earthquakes usually have a greater impact than earthquakes deep in the ground.
Multiple major population centers exist within 300km of today's earthquake. Mashhad is located 42 km to the northeast. Turkmenistan's capital, Ashgabat, is located 232 km to the north-northwest. Tremors were also felt in Afghanistan.
The previous earthquake near Gorgan, Golestan, Iran, on the border with Turkmenistan, with a magnitude of 5.1, occurred around noon on March 22, 2023.
