U.S. President Joe Biden, on April 21, inked an executive order directing federal agencies to scrutinize policies potentially harming communities and the environment.
The order envisages establishing an Office of Environmental Justice within the White House to coordinate governmental efforts. It will also require federal agencies to inform communities if toxic substances are released from a federal facility.
Media reports that disasters like the derailment on April 21 of a freight train in East Palestine, Ohio, caused a hazardous chemical spill that brought attention to environmental pollution that some communities experience at higher rates.
President announced the initiative during a Friday White House Rose Garden event.
