Paris has taken first place in the ranking of European cities in terms of the number of deaths of elderly people due to anomalous heat, The Lancet Planetary Health reports.
The research was conducted from 2000 to 2009 among 854 cities in 30 European countries.
According to the study, 203,620 people die from cold and 20,173 from heat each year in Europe. Hot weather has a negative effect on the health of people, especially the elderly.
In turn, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that in 2022, at least 15,000 people died in Europe due to hot weather. For reference, the United Nations has reported that the last eight years have been the warmest in the history of meteorological observations.
In the summer of 2022, many European countries suffered from drought: anomalous heat was recorded in Spain, France, Portugal, Great Britain, Germany, and other countries. In mid-July, the European Commission warned that the harvest in half of the European Union will be reduced due to weather conditions.
The impact of the drought was not limited to Europe. As Bloomberg writes, due to the heat, cotton production has decreased in Brazil and the United States, and the price of the product have increased by 30%.
