Turkmenistan reached a foreign trade surplus of $5.4bn in 2022, a representative of Turkmenistan's Ministry of Finance and Economy told Daryo.
"Turkmenistan's foreign trade in 2022 was $20bn, including exports ($12.7bn) and imports ($7.3bn)".
By comparison, Turkmenistan's total foreign trade turnover in 2021 was $15.1bn (with a surplus of $2.61bn, compared to $691.5mn in 2020).
Energy is one of the priority sectors of Turkmenistan's economy, accounting for almost 80% of national exports.
The country has recently focused on producing high-value-added products, actively developing the gas chemical industry. As a result, the production of synthetic gasoline, polymers, and mineral fertilizers has already been established.
Last year, China was the country's largest trading partner since it is the leading buyer of Turkmen gas, followed by Turkey and Russia.
Gas exports (buyers China, Russia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan) in 2022 increased by more than 60% compared to a year earlier, while electricity exports (Afghanistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan) increased by almost 30%.
Turkmenistan also sells petroleum, textile, carpets, and food products to world markets.
