Turkmenistan plans to produce 37.5bln kWh of electricity in 2028, a 22.5% increase from 2022, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported on April 3.
"Implementation of these plans will strengthen the country's energy security and independence and ensure the efficiency of electricity production, consumption, and export".
Electricity in Turkmenistan comes from natural gas, whose reserves make the country the world's fourth-largest.
Turkmenistan sells electricity to Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan (through Uzbekistan). Ashgabat is also interested in the Caucasus (via Iran) and South Asian markets (via Afghanistan).
Turkmenistan's energy ministry said it plans to export 9.0bln kWh of electricity in 2022, up from 7.5bln a year earlier.
Turkmenistan has 12 power plants with a capacity of 6,943.2 megawatts, with 51 turbines, including 39 gas and 12 steam turbines. The vast majority of the stations are equipped with General Electric equipment. It is planned to transfer several plants to a combined operation system (gas+steam).
This sector of Turkmenistan's economy is supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which has allocated $500mln to construct ring main power lines across the country.
