Turkmenistan held parliamentary (Majlis) elections on 26 March.
According to the Central Election Commission in Ashgabat, 91.12% of voters cast their ballots by 7pm.
In the election, 258 candidates, nominated by three political parties, including the Democratic, Agrarian and Industrialists' and Entrepreneurs' Parties of Turkmenistan, as well as groups of citizens, ran for 125 parliamentary seats.
According to the Constitution, a citizen of Turkmenistan who has reached the age of twenty-five by election day and has permanently resided in Turkmenistan for the preceding ten years may be elected to parliament.
The key powers of parliament are to approve the State budget; call for the election of the president and deputies; decide on the holding of national referendums; decide on changes in the State border and administrative-territorial division; and ratify and denounce international treaties.
