Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has sent a congratulatory letter to his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedov on the occasion of the Islamic Ummah's holy month of Oraz.

The letter was published in the Turkmen media.

"We are glad that the strategic partnership with Turkmenistan has been expanding in all directions in recent years, and our cooperation, based on mutual respect and trust, has yielded practical results".

Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, which share a 1,650 km-long border, have increased their bilateral trade more than fivefold over the past few years, reaching nearly US $1bn.

Uzbekistan buys Turkmen gas and electricity, and Turkmenistan counts on aid in developing car manufacturing.

The two countries recently agreed to share the region's largest (by volume) river, the Amu Darya, and to establish a border trade centre.

This was the result of a state visit by Berdimuhamedov to Uzbekistan in mid-July 2022 and his talks with Mirziyoyev, who called the water agreement "historic."
