Uzbekistan's president Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with the members of the Legislative Chamber, Senate, and leadership of the Supreme Court earlier this week. A number of proposals were voiced by the president, deputies, and senators during the talk.
"New Uzbekistan cannot be built without strong political parties that represent the interests of different segments of the population," said Mirziyoyev.
He proposed to revise the current electoral system and introduce a mixed-majoritarian and proportional electoral system in the country in an effort to further increase the role and position of political parties.
This system proposes that half of the deputies of the Legislative Chamber are elected according to the current procedure, and the other half are elected based on the lists of political parties. For example, if citizens choose a specific candidate for 75 seats, they vote for a political party for the remaining 75 seats.
