Over half of the world's population could be obese or overweight by 2035, the World Obesity Federation has warned.
Reportedly, 51% or over four bn people will be affected, with rates rising fastest among children. Low or middle-income countries in Africa and Asia are expected to see the most significant rises if the current trend prevails. The cost of obesity is predicted to reach over $4 trillion annually by 2035 if prevention and treatment measures do not improve.
The president of the federation, Prof Louise Baur, described the report's findings as a clear warning to countries to act now. More highly processed foods and greater sedentary behavior are two reasons for the expected increase.
