Uzbekistan's Presidential Statistics Agency reports that total trade with Turkmenistan in 2022 was $927mn, up from $274mn in 2018, $541.9mn in 2019, and $527mn in 2020.
The increase in foreign trade turnover between the two countries is primarily due to the fact that Uzbekistan, where Russian Gazprom previously re-exported Turkmen gas, switched to buying it directly in December 2022.
An agreement has been inked with Turkmenistan to import 1.5bn cubic meters of natural gas for the winter season.
Turkmenistan delivered $732mn worth of products in 2022. In particular, Turkmenistan sells gas, electricity, oil products, polymers, and cotton yarn to Uzbekistan, while it buys mineral fertilizers, vegetables, transport, and construction materials.
