Türkiye has decided to raise the minimum wage by 55% from the beginning of 2023, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Thursday, as part of efforts to ease the burden of rising living costs on Turkish citizens.
According to the president, the monthly net minimum salary will be 8,506.80₺ (about $455 ) in 2023, marking a 55% hike from the level determined in July and a 100% increase from January.
Erdogan said at a press conference that given that the employer and employee unions could not reach an agreement, the Turkish government stepped in and determined the level of minimum salary. In a written statement after the announcement, the Turkish Confederation of Workers Unions said the wage determined by the government does not meet the living conditions of employees.
Since the currency crisis that erupted in mid-2018, Türkiye has been experiencing serious economic problems such as high inflation and a declining purchasing power for households. For the first time since May 2021, Türkiye's inflation saw a slowdown in November, decreasing to 84.3% from 85.5% in October, the highest since 2002. Official data showed that nearly 6mn people, or around 38%of all employees, receive minimum wage in Türkiye.
