Uzbekistan has witnessed an increase in electric car imports over the past seven years, with figures soaring by tenfold. According to preliminary data from the Statistics Agency, the country imported 12,913 electric cars valued at $166.8mn between January and August 2024, marking an increase of 2,371 vehicles compared to the previous month.
The breakdown of imports reveals that China is by far the dominant supplier, accounting for 12,840 electric vehicles. Other notable sources include Kazakhstan with 22, Hong Kong with 15, Germany with 12, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with 10, and the United States with 9.
The statistics highlight a rise in electric vehicle imports. In the first seven months of 2023, Uzbekistan imported 7,391 electric cars valued at $217.1mn from 10 foreign countries, a nearly sixfold increase compared to the same period in 2022, when 1,307 electric cars were imported. In 2022, Uzbekistan imported 180 electric cars worth $69.8mn, reflecting an increase of 1,371 units from 2021.
A historical perspective shows the dramatic growth in electric vehicle imports: 13 electric cars were imported in 2018, 39 in 2019, and 131 in 2020. This upward trend indicates a growing acceptance and adoption of electric vehicles among Uzbek consumers, driven by increased awareness of environmental issues and government initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable transport solutions.
While China remains the undisputed leader in supplying electric cars to Uzbekistan, there have been imports from other countries, including Turkey and Spain, in 2021. However, detailed information regarding the volume of imports from these nations remains unavailable.
