In a step toward environmental sustainability, the Surkhandarya region has embarked on a tree-planting campaign as part of the national Yashil Makon (Green Nation) project. The region plans to plant 6.3mn bushes, including 1.2mn fruit tree saplings, with the goal of transforming its landscapes and contributing to the nationwide reforestation efforts.
Autumn, known for its ideal planting conditions, has been chosen for the large-scale operation. Local experts, aware of the season’s benefits, have begun preparations along roads, canals, ditches, and vacant lands around organizations and enterprises. Varieties such as larch, catalpa, poplar, acacia, paulownia, and mulberry are being selected for planting. Machinery is actively leveling lands covered with grasses like reeds and gumai, creating optimal conditions for irrigation, while workers dig pits for saplings.
A recent seminar, held along the Termiz-Tashkent highway, gathered regional leaders, district mayors, and heads of organizations to strategize the project's execution. They were tasked with mobilizing resources to beautify the highway's surroundings and plant scenic and fruit-bearing trees.
One of the core missions is to revitalize the 49-kilometer stretch of highway from the al-Hakim at-Tirmizi complex to the mausoleum of Isa at-Tirmizi, with plans to plant decorative and fruit trees along both sides of the road.
However, the success of this project hinges on water availability. During the seminar, speakers, including elders and the region’s leadership, emphasized that without water, the project’s efforts would be in vain. This concern led to directives for water supply authorities to introduce efficient irrigation methods such as sprinkler and drip irrigation to conserve water while ensuring the growth of the newly planted trees.
The Yashil Makon (Green Nation) project not only aims to create a more vibrant environment but also underscores the critical role of water in sustaining life and growth. As Surkhandarya continues its green transformation, ensuring proper irrigation will be key to the long-term success of this initiative.
