First electric cars roll off BYD factory in Uzbekistan

First electric cars roll off BYD factory in Uzbekistan

The first electric cars have emerged from the BYD plant located in Jizzakh. This milestone was marked during a visit by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to the region on June 27, where he personally inspected the operations of the newly established BYD Uzbekistan Factory joint venture.

The plant, inaugurated earlier this year during the president's visit to China, represents an initial investment of $160mn. Equipped with industrial infrastructure, including nearly 2 kilometers of railway lines, a components warehouse, and a logistics center capable of handling 1,200 containers, the facility is poised to produce up to 50,000 electric cars annually in its first phase.

Highlighting the advanced technological setup, the factory boasts robotic systems imported from China, ensuring a highly automated production process. A precision laboratory has been established to meticulously verify the geometric dimensions of each electric car manufactured.

President Mirziyoyev, accompanied by Chinese partners, was briefed on the current production of the Chazor and Song Plus Champion models. He also witnessed the signing of the first electric cars off the production line.

Looking forward, plans are in place to expand the factory's production capabilities significantly. The second phase, estimated at $300mn, aims to increase production to 200,000 units annually, with a further expansion to 500,000 units envisioned in the third phase valued at $500mn.

These expansions will also drive increased localization, beginning with the production of bumpers, mirrors, varnish, and plastic parts, and eventually encompassing batteries, electric motors, aluminum parts, tires, and seats.

Recognizing the importance of innovation and skilled workforce development, discussions during the visit emphasized the establishment of an R&D center aimed at fostering education and technological advancements. Measures to enhance cost efficiency through localization projects were also deliberated, aligning with ambitions to penetrate regional markets in the near future.

Currently employing 1,200 individuals, the BYD Uzbekistan Factory plans to expand its workforce as it progresses through its development stages. Last year alone, 200 employees underwent training at UzAuto Motors factories, with an additional 92 specialists slated for training in China this year. Upon completion of all three phases, the factory anticipates creating up to 10,000 new jobs locally.
