Uzbekistan and Russia have announced plans to develop new logistics routes, as reported by the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan. The initiative aims to enhance connectivity and bolster trade between the two countries while opening access to international markets.
On November 19, during the "Transport Week-2024" event in Moscow, Uzbekistan's Transport Minister Ilkhom Makhkamov met with Russia's Transport Minister Roman Starovoit. The two officials explored opportunities for collaboration on railway infrastructure projects and new transit routes, particularly those traversing the Caspian Sea.
As part of the discussions, both countries signed a memorandum of understanding to formalize their cooperation on railway infrastructure development.
Plans for Railway Equipment Supply and Localization
During his state visit to Uzbekistan in May, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized plans to supply railway equipment to Uzbekistan and localize its production within the country. This effort aims to strengthen Uzbekistan’s domestic capacity and improve its railway infrastructure.
International North-South Corridor
President Putin also highlighted the development of the North-South international transport corridor as a strategic priority. The corridor, designed to connect Russia and Belarus with the Indian Ocean via Central Asia, includes routes that may pass through or near Uzbekistan, potentially granting the country direct access to the ocean.
Engagement with Aktau Sea Trade Port
On November 7, officials from Uzbekistan’s Consulate General met with the head of the Aktau Sea Trade Port in Kazakhstan. They discussed the port's technical capabilities and its role in facilitating the export of Uzbek goods. The meeting emphasized prospects for utilizing the Kazakh port as a transit hub for Uzbek products.
