President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has proposed measures to enhance the role of the opposition in Uzbekistan’s parliament. Speaking at the inaugural plenary session of the fifth convocation of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis on November 18, he highlighted the need for reforms to create a more competitive legislative process.
The president suggested increasing the number of guaranteed roles for the parliamentary opposition from three to six. Opposition members would also chair one parliamentary committee and serve as deputy chairs in two others. Additionally, they would have the right to propose at least one issue quarterly during government hearings and parliamentary inquiries.
Mirziyoyev also introduced reforms to strengthen the Legislative Chamber’s oversight of the government. Members will now have the authority to listen to reports from government officials and recommend dismissals to the president based on performance evaluations.
