Malaysia's Meraque Group has signed an agreement with Uzbekistan to establish production of "smart" agricultural machinery, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for agricultural purposes, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan.
As part of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's official visit to Malaysia, a delegation consisting of representatives from Uzbekistan's Ministry of Agriculture, the khokimiyats of Tashkent and Kashkadarya regions, and agricultural enterprises visited Malaysia.
The delegation engaged in discussions with various Malaysian departments and companies about advancing agricultural technologies, fisheries, rice cultivation, sericulture, and more.
The agreement will see the creation of a manufacturing facility at the Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture Mechanization in Yangiyul district, where Meraque plans to produce advanced agricultural equipment, including agro-drones.
This collaboration follows the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between Meraque and the Ministry of Agriculture in autumn 2024. In September 2024, Meraque announced plans to invest MYR 20mn ($4.7mn) in Uzbekistan’s agricultural sector over the next three years.
Further agreements include cooperation between Uzbekistan's Centre for Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation and Malaysia’s Agricultural Research Development Institute to exchange rice varieties for pilot production. Additionally, the Malaysian Ministry of Agriculture's Department of Fisheries will assist Uzbekbaliksanoat in developing intensive fish and shrimp farming, introducing biofloc technology to aquatic farms.
The Agricultural Marketing Agency of Uzbekistan has also pledged to support the export of Uzbek silk, fruits, and vegetables to Malaysia, while Malaysia's Islamic Development Authority (JAKIM) will provide training courses for Uzbek farmers and agribusinesses on halal standards.
The delegation also participated in the Uzbek-Malaysian business forum, where they showcased Uzbek rice varieties, presented plans for sericulture, and signed several agreements with Malaysian companies focused on agricultural technology, yield improvement, and the promotion of export-oriented crops.
