Kazakhstan has expressed that it does not support international sanctions but will not take actions that facilitate their circumvention. Deputy Prime Minister Serik Jumanğarin stated that while the country does not endorse sanctions, it is committed to protecting its own economic interests and industries. Kazakhstan’s approach is particularly focused on sectors where sanctions might impact local production, news agency Vedemosti reports
Jumanğarin explained that certain goods produced in Kazakhstan are affected by sanctions, particularly those with dual-use applications (both civilian and military). Despite this, the government has made it clear that it will not impose restrictions on these goods. Many of these products are vital to the local economy and are produced in regions with large labor forces, including single-industry towns where entire communities depend on these industries. For Kazakhstan, safeguarding employment and production in these regions is a priority.
The deputy prime minister also mentioned that Kazakhstan will not follow sanctions if they negatively affect its key industries. An example he provided was the case of ball bearings, which are manufactured in Kazakhstan to specifications used in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The government chose not to join the international ban on these products, arguing that the specifications differ from those used in other markets, particularly Western countries.
In addition, Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vasilenko emphasized that while Kazakhstan has not imposed sanctions on Russia, the country does not want its territory used to circumvent international sanctions. This statement aligns with Kazakhstan's policy of avoiding actions that would indirectly support the bypassing of sanctions while ensuring that its own national interests are maintained.
