The Barki Tojik Energy Holding has announced the introduction of electricity restrictions across Tajikistan, effective September 22. This measure is a response to the yearly increase in electricity demand from both the population and the socio-economic sector, which has resulted in a seasonal shortage.
Experts predict that the seasonal shortage of electricity may exceed 1 bn kWh. In light of this situation, Barki Tojik has urged the public to use electricity sparingly, especially during the colder season.
Starting September 21, rural districts are now receiving electricity for 8 to 10 hours per day. The designated hours are from 5:00 to 8:00 AM and from 5:00 to 10:00 PM. Barki Tojik has indicated that earlier disruptions in electricity supply were attributed to the overall vulnerability of the infrastructure under excessive load.
Since the beginning of the year, Tajikistan has exported more than 1 bn kWh of electricity to neighbouring countries, generating revenue of $82mn.
