The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan has signed a memorandum of cooperation with ORMEX and Chapter Zero Kazakhstan to introduce international standards for calculating carbon loans in the country's agricultural sector. This agreement marks a step toward adapting innovative climate solutions and positioning Kazakhstan as a leader in sustainable agriculture and carbon management.
ORMEX, a company renowned for its use of ecosystem regenerative agriculture (ERA), will bring its cutting-edge methodology to the project, which incorporates blockchain technology to account for carbon credits. The initiative is part of Kazakhstan's updated nationally determined contributions, aiming to support the country's commitment to reducing emissions by 15% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.
As one of the first projects in the field of carbon removal, it is expected that this initiative will make a notable contribution to Kazakhstan's ambitious goal of reducing carbon emissions by 25mn tons. The project focuses on capturing and storing carbon in soils, enhancing soil health and contributing to broader environmental benefits.
Sabit Mukhanov, CEO of Chapter Zero Kazakhstan, emphasized the importance of intersectoral collaboration to tackle climate change challenges.
"This memorandum highlights the need for cross-sectoral cooperation to address climate change issues. By integrating resilience into agriculture, we can set a model for other industries and regions, ensuring a sustainable future for Kazakhstan," he said.
This partnership aims not only to improve Kazakhstan's agricultural sector but also to position the country as a regional leader in regenerative agriculture and carbon management.
By combining ORMEX's innovative farming techniques with Chapter Zero Kazakhstan's expertise in climate strategy, the initiative offers a unique model for sustainable development that could inspire similar projects across the region.
