Masdar, a leader in renewable energy in the UAE, has achieved a milestone in its 1GW wind farm project in Kazakhstan by signing an Investment Agreement. The agreement, finalized on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, was signed by key representatives including Almassadam Satkaliyev, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy, and Abdulla Zayed, Masdar’s Director of Business and Project Development.
The wind farm, situated in Kazakhstan's Jambyl region, is Masdar's first venture in the country. It includes an advanced 600-megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), marking it as one of the largest wind projects in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region. W Solar, Qazaq Green Power (a subsidiary of Samruk-Kazyna Group), and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund are co-developing the project with Masdar as the lead developer.
Kazakhstan aims to increase its renewable energy share to 15% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The 1GW wind farm in Jambyl aligns with these goals by delivering power to approximately 300,000 homes and reducing CO₂ emissions by 2mn tonnes per year once operational in Q1 2026.
Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, remarked on the significance of the milestone:
“Today marks an important milestone for the UAE and Kazakhstan and highlights the strength of our strategic partnership. We are proud to support Kazakhstan’s net-zero ambitions and to help implement the UAE Consensus to triple global renewable energy by 2030.”
“Providing 1GW of clean, emissions-free energy, the Jambyl wind farm reflects Kazakhstan's ambitious renewable energy plans. Collaborating with the UAE and Masdar brings us closer to our 2060 net-zero target,” Almassadam Satkaliyev, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy, added.
The agreement stresses a growing UAE-Kazakhstan alliance in renewable energy. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber highlighted the strong UAE-Kazakhstan partnership in clean energy, noting that Masdar's 1GW wind farm in Jambyl advances their shared commitment to renewable energy progress in Central Asia.
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, emphasized the project’s significance for Kazakhstan’s renewable energy sector, expressing confidence that Masdar’s expertise in large-scale renewables will bring positive impacts to the region.
Masdar’s commitment to clean energy aligns with both Kazakhstan's and the UAE’s goals, building on a pledge made at COP28 to cooperatively boost Kazakhstan's renewables sector. Established in 2006, Masdar has driven UAE's sustainability vision globally, with projects in over 40 countries and a target to reach 100GW of renewable energy capacity and become a green hydrogen leader by 2030.
