The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and Kazakhstan have formalized an agreement to launch the first phase of the Climate Resilient Water Resources Development Project. The signing ceremony, which took place at COP29, was attended by Kazakhstan’s President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and featured the signatures of Nurlan Baibazarov, Kazakhstan's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy, alongside IsDB President Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser.
The $1.32bn project is primarily backed by a $1.15bn funding commitment from IsDB and will focus on enhancing Kazakhstan’s water infrastructure while building resilience to climate change. The initiative aims to address long-term water management challenges and climate adaptation in the region.
The project will include the construction of 11 strategically placed reservoirs to store water seasonally and mitigate flood risks, along with the rehabilitation of over 3,400 kilometers of irrigation networks. Additionally, the project will improve water flow management along 100 kilometers of rivers, boosting the distribution and accessibility of water resources for communities.
A critical aspect of the project will involve training 1,100 staff members in modern water management techniques. In addition, the initiative plans to provide climate-smart agricultural training for 100,000 local farmers, enabling them to increase crop yields sustainably.
“This project demonstrates the powerful synergy between IsDB and Kazakhstan, focusing on long-term climate resilience, food security, and sustainable economic growth for the people of Kazakhstan,” said Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, President of IsDB. “By 2032, this project will result in 350,000 hectares of sustainably irrigated land for crop production, a 20% average yield increase for key crops, and a 25% reduction in water loss in the irrigation system.”
The project represents the first phase of a comprehensive water security program designed to bolster Kazakhstan’s agricultural productivity and water resources. It aims to secure vital water sources for vulnerable communities, enhance agricultural outputs, and improve the country’s capacity to adapt to the challenges of climate change.
The project aligns with Kazakhstan’s commitment to environmental sustainability and IsDB’s goal of fostering innovative development solutions in member countries. It stresses the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring sustainable resource management and strengthening the resilience of nations against climate-induced challenges.
