The irrigation season in Kazakhstan has officially ended, having commenced on April 1 across all regions of the country. Over the growing season, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation supplied approximately 11.2bn cubic meters of water to the nation's farmers.
The Kazvodkhoz enterprise, operating under the ministry, signed about 25,000 contracts with agricultural enterprises to provide irrigation water. The Kyzylorda region received the largest volume, with farmers utilizing approximately 3.7bn cubic meters. The Turkestan region followed closely with 3.4bn cubic meters, while Zhetisu and Almaty regions were supplied with 1.37 and 1.57bn cubic meters, respectively.
Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, praised the government’s efforts in preventing water shortages and emergencies this year.
"We learned from last year's challenges and ensured an uninterrupted supply of irrigation water to farmers. Water diplomacy played a significant role, with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan sending more water than initially planned through successful negotiations," Nurzhigitov stated.
As the irrigation season concludes, the government is now focusing on preparations for the flood period. Reservoirs in the northern, western, eastern, and central regions have begun releasing water, while those in southern Kazakhstan are operating in accumulation mode.
The upcoming meeting of the Interstate Coordination Water Management Commission of Central Asia will address the forecast schedule for the operation of the Naryn-Syrdarya reservoir cascade. Additionally, water supply volumes for next year’s pre-irrigation period will be determined.
