Uzbekistan has reported a reduction of 1.5 bn cubic meters of gas consumption since the beginning of 2024, a development attributed to the commissioning of new green energy capacities.
In 1H24, the country implemented several green energy initiatives, resulting in the launch of 10 solar and wind power plants. These plants have a combined capacity of 2.4 GW and have generated approximately 1.6 bn kilowatt-hours of renewable energy. The increase in green energy production has enabled the significant gas savings reported by the government.
Uzbekistan is setting ambitious goals for the expansion of renewable energy sources (RES), aiming to increase capacity to over 20 GW by 2030. This target is expected to account for roughly 40% of the country’s total energy balance, reflecting a strategic shift toward sustainable energy solutions.
In line with these goals, Uzbekistan plans to commission two wind power plants, each with a capacity of 500 MW, in the Peshku and Gijduvan districts of the Bukhara region by 2025. Additionally, four wind power plants with a total capacity of 1,600 MW are scheduled to be operational in the Republic of Karakalpakstan by 2026.
