Uzbekistan has emphasized the importance of climate resilience in its transport sector, as stated by Deputy Minister of Transport Jasurbek Choriyev during the panel session titled "Investing in Resilient Roads for a Better Tomorrow." This session is part of the annual meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) Board of Governors.
The Deputy Minister noted that the transport sector plays a pivotal role in Uzbekistan's national development strategy. "Our country is undergoing significant transformations, with a growing population, expanding cities, and a diversifying economy. To support this growth, we are investing substantial resources in modernizing our domestic and international transport networks to meet 21st-century demands," he added.
Choriyev highlighted the collaboration with AIIB to implement transformative projects that are set to redefine the transport landscape in Uzbekistan.
Choriyev addressed the significant risks posed by climate change, including rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and extreme weather events, to the country's transport infrastructure. He asserted, "We must enhance the resilience of our roads, bridges, railways, and airports to ensure they can withstand the challenges posed by a changing climate. Our commitment to creating climate-resilient infrastructure is reflected in our low-carbon strategy, which outlines our approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the resilience of our infrastructure."
However, he emphasized that transitioning to electrification also demands a dependable and resilient transport infrastructure capable of supporting such technologies. This includes the establishment of charging stations, and power lines, and the integration of smart grid technologies, alongside adapting road networks to cater to the specific needs of electric transport.
It is noteworthy that the AIIB is hosting its inaugural annual meeting of the Board of Governors in Central Asia under the theme "Building Resilient Infrastructure for All" on September 25-26, 2024, in Samarkand. Over two days, more than 25 panel discussions will take place, addressing topics such as innovations in infrastructure financing, climate resilience, sustainable development, and the digital transformation of infrastructure projects.
