The arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov has led to a notable spike in downloads for the popular messaging app, according to TechCrunch.
As of August 26, global downloads of Telegram on iOS surged by 4% compared to the previous day. In France, where Durov was detained, Telegram has become the top-ranked social networking app in the App Store and holds the 3rd spot overall in application rankings.
The App Store's ranking system combines app installs, download speed, and other metrics. In the U.S., Telegram moved up to the 3rd position in the social networking category on August 26 and experienced a significant rise from 18th to 8th place in the overall App Store rankings over the weekend.
This marks Telegram's highest ranking on the platform since at least January 1, 2023, according to Appfigures.
Pavel Durov was apprehended on August 24 at Le Bourget airport while traveling from Azerbaijan to Paris on a private plane. He faces allegations of non-cooperation with French authorities concerning cyber and financial crimes related to Telegram.
Currently, Durov is under investigation by France's national cybercrime and anti-fraud office and remains in custody.
