At the Paris-2024 Summer Olympic Games, Uzbekistan’s Greco-Roman wrestler Rustam Assakalov delivered a strong performance, reaching the quarterfinals in the men’s -97 kg category.
In the round of 1/8 finals, Assakalov triumphed over Honduras' Kevin Mejia Castillo, securing his place in the next stage of the competition.
Assakalov is set to face Armenia’s Artur Aleksanyan in the quarterfinals.
Earlier in the tournament, Uzbekistan's Aram Vardanyan also showcased impressive skill by defeating Egypt's Mahmoud Abdelrahman, advancing to the quarterfinals.
In women's wrestling, Aktenge Keunimjayeva competed in the -50 kg category but was defeated by Ukraine's Oksana Livach in the 1/8 finals.
Despite the loss, Keunimjayeva may still have the opportunity to compete for a bronze medal if Livach advances to the final.
Greco-Roman Wrestling
Greco-Roman wrestling, one of the earliest Olympic sports, debuted at the 1896 Athens Games and has been a staple since the 1908 London Olympics. This style focuses on using holds, throws, and locks, with the goal of pinning both of the opponent’s shoulders to the mat or scoring more points within two three-minute halves.
Points are awarded based on the difficulty of moves, with up to five points possible for a grand amplitude throw. Matches can also end in a fall (instant victory by pinning), technical superiority (winning by an eight-point lead), or disqualification/injury of the opponent. In case of a tie, the winner is decided based on the highest point move, fewest cautions, and last technical point scored.
