Uzbek athlete Sitora Turdibekova successfully passed the first stage of the Olympic boxing tournament in the weight category up to 60 kg. Her opponent in the fight for a place in the quarterfinals was Lin Yu Ting from Taiwan, whose participation has been the subject of much controversy and discussion within the sports community.
In the quarterfinals, Turdibekova faced Lin Yu Ting, a two-time world champion from Chinese Taipei. Despite putting up a worthy fight, Turdibekova was ultimately defeated by Lin on August 2 in Paris. This result means the Uzbek athlete's journey at the Olympic Games has come to an end, while Lin continues to advance in the competition.
Lin Yu Ting's involvement in women's competitions has been contentious. The International Boxing Association (IBA) previously suspended Lin from participating in the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi. The suspension was based on the results of gender testing conducted during the 2022 World Championships in Istanbul and again before the world championship in India. According to the IBA, Lin Yu Ting does not meet the criteria for participation in women's competitions and has a physiological advantage over her rivals.
Despite the controversy surrounding Lin's admission to the Olympic Games, Sitora Turdibekova remained focused and determined for the upcoming fight.
"My main goal now is to show my best at the Olympics. I have been preparing hard for this tournament and intend to fight for victory in every match," the Uzbek athlete stated.
The match has sparked further debate due to Lin Yuting's gender identity, with some critics pointing to her as a transgender athlete competing against women. This has led to discussions about the fairness and integrity of the competition, with differing opinions on whether Lin should be allowed to compete in the women's category.
