Kyrgyzstan's State Committee for National Security (SCNS) reported on July 5, that they have successfully thwarted an attempt to seize power by force. The intelligence services, through their diligent efforts, have stopped a group that was planning to destabilize the socio-political environment of the country through mass unrest, ASIA-Today informed.
According to a report from AKIpress, citing the SCNS press service, the group in question was described as "destructive," with intentions to violently overthrow the government. Investigators revealed that the group comprised individuals who support criminal ideologies and are fervent followers of certain religious ideologies, though specific details about the ideology were not disclosed.
In a swift operation, the SCNS detained five individuals identified as K.B.A., M.E.J., B.B.K., M.A.J., and S.A.B. These suspects are now held in the temporary detention center of the State Committee for National Security. The arrests were made after a series of searches in the suspects' homes and vehicles, where authorities discovered components for improvised explosive devices, firearms, ammunition, walkie-talkies, body armor, law enforcement uniforms, drones, extremist literature, and other prohibited items.
The SCNS's actions follow a series of similar interventions in recent years. In June 2023, a notable number of arrests were made in Bishkek, where over 20 people were detained on suspicion of preparing a violent coup. Earlier this year, in January, President Sadyr Japarov announced that another coup attempt had been prevented, orchestrated by individuals who had previously engaged in corruption and tax evasion.
The SCNS has not released further details on the thwarted coup attempt, maintaining the confidentiality of ongoing investigations. However, their statement emphasized the gravity of the threat posed by the group and the importance of the measures taken to prevent the planned violence and upheaval.
