Russia has cautioned against a potential military involvement in Niger, asserting that it would result in a "long-lasting conflict," in response to the West African regional group Ecowas's intention to form a standby force, BBC reports.
The Russian foreign ministry stressed that such an intervention could destabilize the entire Sahel region.
Russia has not officially supported the coup, even as the U.S., a proponent of reinstating ousted leader Mohamed Bazoum, alleges that its Wagner mercenary group is exploiting the ongoing instability. Proponents of the coup, including some displaying Russian flags, protested near a French military base close to the capital city, Niamey, on Friday.
Chants included slogans like "Down with France, down with Ecowas."
Both the U.S. and France operate military bases in Niger, which have been utilized to conduct operations against extremist factions in the broader area. Reports suggest that military officials from Ecowas nations will convene on Saturday to develop strategies for potential military intervention.
Ecowas has indicated a willingness to explore diplomatic resolutions to the crisis, yet Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu mentioned on Thursday that "No option is taken off the table, including the use of force as a last resort."
While the U.S. hasn't explicitly advocated for military action, it has called for the junta to relinquish power and allow the reinstatement of Niger's democratic constitution. The Niger junta has yet to react to the recent statements from Ecowas leaders. Meanwhile, concerns are mounting about the well-being of Mr. Bazoum, who has been held captive since the military took control on July 26.
Mr. Bazoum and his family have reportedly endured days without food, electricity, and medical attention, according to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell. UN rights commissioner Volker Turk noted credible accounts indicating that the detention conditions "could amount to inhuman and degrading treatment."
Human Rights Watch stated that Mr. Bazoum informed them this week of the "inhuman and cruel" treatment endured by him and his family. He reportedly expressed concerns about his son's severe heart condition and the lack of access to medical care.
