The American University of Central Asia (AUCA) in Bishkek celebrated a milestone with the inauguration of the Makerspace Learning and Design Center, the largest of its kind in the Kyrgyz Republic.
Funded in part by the U.S. government through the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) American Schools and Hospitals Abroad initiative, along with support from Bard College, and AUCA itself, the center promises to revolutionize innovation and creativity in the region.
Located within AUCA's campus, the Makerspace is equipped with cutting-edge technology including 3D printers, laser cutters, robotics kits, and sewing equipment. It aims to serve not only AUCA students and faculty but also a broad spectrum of professionals—scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and developers—who seek a collaborative environment to nurture ideas, create prototypes, and attract potential investors.
The grand opening ceremony drew prominent figures such as Akylbek Zhaparov, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic, and Kanat Abdrakhmatov, President of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, highlighting the center's strategic importance in fostering technological advancement and entrepreneurship.
"Makerspace is a place where technologies become accessible to everyone, and innovative projects become reality. There are many creative and progressive people in Kyrgyzstan who urgently need such space as an opportunity to realize their potential and benefit society," Akylbek Zhaparov emphasized.
USAID/Kyrgyz Republic Mission Director Kaya Adams lauded the collaborative effort, stating:
"We are especially proud of our partnership with the American University of Central Asia. This new building will strengthen AUCA’s international, diverse learning community and multidisciplinary learning approach. It will bring together creative thinkers of differing nationalities, ethnicities, genders, and professional backgrounds, including people with disabilities, to forge innovative solutions."
