Construction began on a small hydroelectric power plant (HPP) at the Orto-Tokoy reservoir in Kyrgyzstan's Issyk-Kul region, the Cabinet of Ministers reports. Akylbek Japarov, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of Kyrgyzstan's Presidential Administration participated in the foundation stone-laying ceremony.
Japarov remarked, "The foundation stone for the Orto-Tokoy Reservoir's small HPP has been laid today. This project will eventually supply electricity to over 14,000 consumers in Balykchy city. We are making steady progress toward achieving energy independence." He also referenced President Sadyr Zhaparov's recent inauguration of the Bala-Saruu HPP and the planned construction of another HPP at the Papan Reservoir.
Highlighting the national Kambarata HPP-1 project, Japarov noted its rapid advancement and the formation of a committee including international organizations and financial institutions. "These projects will position Kyrgyzstan as a significant hydroelectric power producer," he stressed.
Japarov also commented on the country's stable economic growth, driven by the active construction of social facilities, residential buildings, and ongoing road reconstruction efforts.
The Orto-Tokoy reservoir's small HPP is designed to have a capacity of 21 MW. Approved by the Cabinet of Ministers under the Anti-Crisis Action Plan, the project is slated for completion within two years. The construction agreement for this HPP was signed between the China National Machinery Industry Corporation (CHMC) and Chakan HPP.
