Turkmenistan's gas exports to China totalled $4bn in 5M24, the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China reports. Russia followed as the second-largest supplier of pipeline gas to China, with exports valued at $3.2bn, and Myanmar was third with $562mn.
Australia remains the leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to China, delivering 11 mn tons valued at $6.3bn. Qatar supplied 7.7 mn tons worth $4.5bn, placing second, while Malaysia was third with 3.7 mn tons amounting to $1.8bn.
Turkmenistan's natural gas is transported to China via three pipeline lines with a total annual capacity of 55 bn cubic meters. Trade between Turkmenistan and China in 1Q24 reached nearly $2.6bn, with Turkmenistan's exports accounting for approximately 92%, or $2.4bn, primarily through natural gas sales.
Meanwhile, Ivan Volynkin, Russia's envoy in Ashgabat, noted that the total trade turnover between Russia and Turkmenistan in 2023 was slightly over $1.6bn. This figure is notably lower than the trade volume between Turkmenistan and China in 1Q24, underscoring the significant trade relationship between Turkmenistan and China.
