The International Institute for Central Asia (IICA) in Tashkent is gearing up to host an expert conference titled "Central Asia – the European Union: A New Agenda for Security Cooperation" on May 24, 2024.
The conference, initiated by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, follows through on the commitments made by Central Asian Heads of State and the President of the European Council during the Second Meeting of Leaders of the Central Asia – European Union in June 2023 in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan.
Co-organized by the International Institute for Central Asia and the European Union Delegation in Uzbekistan, the event will see high-level representation from both parties. The European Union will be represented by EU Special Representative for Central Asia, Terhi Hakala, EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, Bartjan Wegter, EU Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Charlotte Adriaen, along with program coordinators, project managers from EU-funded initiatives, and other experts specializing in EU-Central Asia security cooperation.
On the Uzbek side and from other Central Asian countries, experts from analytical structures, as well as representatives from pertinent ministries and departments, will participate in the conference.
The primary focus of the conference will be to conduct a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the existing collaboration between the European Union and Central Asia within the framework of various security cooperation programs such as LEICA (Law Enforcement in Central Asia), BOMCA (Border Management Programme in Central Asia), and CADAP (Central Asia Drug Action Programme), among others.
Furthermore, the conference will delve into exploring avenues for enhancing partnerships to effectively address shared security challenges including terrorism, extremism, radicalism, cybercrime, cross-border organized crime, and human trafficking.
With the ever-evolving landscape of global security threats, the conference is expected to provide a crucial platform for dialogue, exchange of expertise, and strategic planning aimed at fostering stronger ties between Central Asia and the European Union in the realm of security cooperation.
