Kyrgyzstan inaugurated the Bala-Saruu hydroelectric power station on May 21, as it was reported by Kyrgyzstan's presidential press service. Situated on the Kirov reservoir in the Talas region, this small-scale hydroelectric facility marks a pivotal moment in Kyrgyzstan's energy landscape.
With three generators boasting a combined capacity of 25 megawatts, the Bala-Saruu hydroelectric power station is poised to contribute substantially to the nation's electricity generation.
The project, with a total investment of 2.8 bn soms ($31.8 mn), received funding support from the Russian-Kyrgyz Development Fund, underlining the importance of international cooperation in bolstering Kyrgyzstan's energy infrastructure. President Sadyr Japarov, in a symbolic gesture, initiated electricity production by pressing a button at the inauguration ceremony, signifying the commencement of operations at the hydroelectric units.
Addressing the pressing issue of electricity shortages, President Japarov highlighted Kyrgyzstan's vast hydropower potential, with around 90% of its territory occupied by mountain ranges and deep rivers. Despite this, the country has historically underutilized its natural resources. The Bala-Saruu hydroelectric power station serves as a testament to Kyrgyzstan's commitment to harnessing its renewable energy potential for sustainable development.
The construction of the Bala-Saruu project diverges from past practices of relying heavily on international lenders and foreign contractors. Instead, the feasibility study was developed domestically by a research institute under the Ministry of Energy, with construction undertaken solely by national companies. This approach not only signifies a shift towards self-reliance but also minimizes dependence on external entities, thereby safeguarding the nation's sovereignty and economic interests.
The Bala-Saruu hydroelectric power station joins the ranks of Kyrgyzstan's existing hydroelectric facilities, which collectively contribute to the nation's energy portfolio. Among the notable installations are the Toktogul hydroelectric power station, Kurpsai HPP, Kambarata HPP-2, At-Bashinskaya HPP, Uch-Kurgan hydroelectric power station, Tash-Kumyr HPP, and Shamaldy-Sai hydroelectric power station.
