In a move addressing the pressing issue of climate change, Tajikistan has officially joined hands with over 40 nations worldwide by signing the Declaration on Children, Youth, and Climate Action. This commitment underscores Tajikistan's dedication to accelerating inclusive climate policies and actions that prioritize the welfare of children and young people both nationally and globally.
Represented by the Committee for Environmental Protection, the Tajikistani government acknowledged the escalating impacts of the climate crisis, especially on its younger population. Speaking at the signing event in Dushanbe, Zarafo Kiyomzoda, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection, emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing climate-related challenges.
"We firmly believe that the foundation for successful adaptation to climate change in Tajikistan and the wider Central Asian region will be laid by addressing climate-related challenges together, promoting a common stance among nations, and educating children and youth on these issues," She stated.
The signing ceremony witnessed the participation of Tajikistani children and young people, symbolized by Nisso Masumova (15) and Jahongir Qurbonzoda (17). Both expressed their gratitude towards the government for embracing the declaration and voiced their readiness to contribute to making Tajikistan more resilient to climate change.
"Dear representatives of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Committee on Environmental Protection, we sincerely thank you for adopting the declaration on children, youth, and climate action. We, children, and youth, are ready to contribute to the promotion of this initiative to make our beautiful country more resilient to climate change," Nisso conveyed.
Echoing her sentiments, Jahongir emphasized the inspirational aspect of the government's actions and underscored the importance of collaboration with UNICEF for effective implementation.
"Your partnership with UNICEF is a key component to the successful implementation of this important declaration, and we greatly appreciate your dedication to this cause," He remarked.
The signing of the Declaration on Children, Youth, and Climate Action reaffirms Tajikistan's commitment to advancing climate policies and actions with a focus on inclusivity, children, and youth at the national level. As a key custodian of the declaration, UNICEF stands ready to support the government in its adoption and effective implementation.
Tajikistan joins several Central Asian and European countries, including Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Albania, Armenia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, and others, in adopting this declaration. UNICEF, in collaboration with Tajikistan's Environment Committee, will work towards adapting and strengthening existing systems that children rely on to ensure their resilience against climate change impacts.
"The climate crisis is a child rights crisis. Children do not have time to wait for action on climate. This action is required here and now," Arthur van Diesen, UNICEF Representative in Tajikistan, emphasized the urgency of action.
The Declaration on Children, Youth, and Climate Action was first introduced at the 25th Conference of the Parties (COP25) in Madrid in 2019. UNICEF, as one of its custodians, collaborates with governments globally to support its implementation. All Member States of the United Nations are invited to sign.
