The government of Uzbekistan has recently enacted measures to enhance regulatory frameworks within the country. This includes establishing an expert commission in the field of technical regulation and approving regulations for the operations of the information center on technical barriers to trade, Norma reports.
The expert commission will be tasked with conducting expert examinations of developed technical regulations, proposing amendments or cancellations to existing regulations, and providing necessary conclusions. Furthermore, a technical regulatory agency will be established to oversee these processes, ensuring alignment with state policy objectives.
Operational Procedures
Under the new regulations, the body responsible for drafting technical regulations will submit its proposals to the expert commission, which will then review and provide feedback within a stipulated timeframe of 15 calendar days. Following deliberation at the commission meeting, decisions will be communicated to relevant stakeholders within a week.
Simultaneously, an information center on technical barriers to trade will be integrated into the Institute of Standards of the Technical Regulatory Agency of Uzbekistan. This center will play a crucial role in facilitating communication with World Trade Organization (WTO) member states, ensuring timely notifications and responses regarding technical regulations.
Continued Commitment to WTO Accession
This latest development comes in the wake of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's meeting with the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2023. The Director General commended Uzbekistan's efforts towards WTO accession and expressed confidence in the country's forthcoming membership. Uzbekistan remains steadfast in its pursuit of WTO accession, with ongoing support from the WTO Secretariat.
