A meeting between Eldiyor Toshmatov, the Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva, and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), recently took place at the WTO headquarters, Dunyo reports. The discussions held during this meeting shed light on Uzbekistan's growing prominence within the WTO framework and the future visit of the Director General to the country.
Priority Status for Uzbekistan
During the meeting, it was underscored that Uzbekistan has emerged as a priority country for the WTO. The measures implemented by Uzbekistan in alignment with WTO standards garnered commendation from the organization's leadership, signaling a positive trajectory for the country's engagement with global trade regulations.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the WTO, expressed optimism regarding Uzbekistan's journey towards becoming a full member of the organization. She extended assurance of the WTO Secretariat's support in facilitating Uzbekistan's accession process, recognizing the country's commitment to international trade norms and regulations.
Bilateral Cooperation Agreements
Following the productive discussions, both parties reached agreements to advance bilateral cooperation. Plans were set in motion for the visit of the WTO Director General to Uzbekistan in June of this year, underscoring the significance of strengthening ties between Uzbekistan and the WTO.
Additionally, efforts will be intensified to accelerate the activities of the Working Group tasked with Uzbekistan's accession to the WTO. Moreover, initiatives will be undertaken to enhance the qualifications of specialists and align Uzbekistan's legislative framework with the agreements and rules of the WTO.
Earlier, it was reported that the British delegation expressed commendation for Uzbekistan's swift strides towards WTO accession and affirmed its steadfast support for the nation's endeavors in this realm.
