China launches largest overseas energy storage project in Uzbekistan

China launches largest overseas energy storage project in Uzbekistan

China Energy Construction Group has officially launched the Uzbekistan Angren District Rochi Energy Storage Project, marking China's largest single-unit electrochemical energy storage investment overseas, CGTN reported. This initiative aims to revolutionize Uzbekistan's energy infrastructure and propel it towards a sustainable future.

The project, a collaborative effort between China and Uzbekistan, heralds a new era in the nation's energy landscape. Spanning an area of approximately 6 hectares, this initiative will deploy lithium iron phosphate batteries to establish a 150-megawatt power configuration alongside a formidable 300-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system.

Scheduled to commence commercial operations in December 2024, the power station is poised to inject an estimated 2.19 bn kilowatt-hours of regulation capacity into the Uzbekistan grid. This infusion of energy promises to catalyze the nation's economic and social development, underpinning its transition towards a more sustainable and resilient energy ecosystem.

The importance of this endeavor lies not only in its scale but also in its strategic implications. By harnessing advanced battery technologies, Uzbekistan aims to enhance its energy security while reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. Moreover, the project aligns with the nation's broader vision of embracing clean and renewable energy solutions to mitigate environmental impact and foster long-term sustainability.

The Uzbekistan Angren District Rochi Energy Storage Project stands as a testament to the burgeoning partnership between China and Uzbekistan in the realm of energy cooperation. It exemplifies the synergistic potential of international collaboration in addressing complex energy challenges and underscores the pivotal role of innovative solutions in shaping the future of global energy systems.

In February 2024, Uzenergoengineering and the China Electric Power Planning and Engineering Institute (EPPEI) reached an agreement to establish a joint venture focused on planning, engineering, and consulting services in the electric power sector. The partnership will engage in various activities, including:

    • Crafting comprehensive short-term and long-term plans for Uzbekistan's electric power industry, integrating modern considerations such as the expansion of renewable energy capacities.
    • Conducting engineering studies that encompass pre-design technical and economic assessments, formulation of project concepts, development of basic and detailed designs, and review and adaptation of project documentation, among other tasks.
    • Offering consultancy services in the electric power sector, providing technical guidance on the design, construction, and operation of power facilities, as well as project management advice and engineering expertise on the adoption of new technologies.
