The World Bank presented the findings and recommendations of the "Uzbekistan: Country Gender Assessment" report at an event in Tashkent, as reported by the organization's office in the capital city on March 27. The presentation included participation from various stakeholders, including representatives from the Oliy Majlis, the Ministry of Employment, the Committee for Women and Family Affairs, public organizations, and businesses.
During the presentation, attendees acknowledged progress in women's labor rights, particularly with the enactment of the revised Labor Code in October 2022. This update introduced provisions aimed at ensuring gender equality, such as guaranteeing equal pay for equal work and lifting restrictions on women's employment in certain sectors.
A significant development highlighted at the event was the criminalization of domestic violence, positioning Uzbekistan among the top five countries making notable strides in advancing gender equality. Despite these advancements, challenges persist in fully leveraging women's economic potential in the country.
However, the assessment also identified existing challenges, including disparities in access to the labor market and societal perceptions regarding women's roles. Experts emphasized the need for a comprehensive and coordinated approach involving both state and societal actors to address these issues effectively.
The World Bank emphasized the importance of further enhancing legislation and strengthening state and public institutions to advance gender equality efforts. Moreover, raising awareness among citizens and ensuring the effective implementation of gender state policies were highlighted as essential steps toward progress in this area.
