The Kazakh government has commenced negotiations with technology behemoth Apple to establish an official representative office within the country, Tengrinews reports.
This development, confirmed by Kazakhstan's Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Aerospace Industry, comes in the wake of concerns raised after iPhone users failed to receive timely warnings during the Almaty earthquake in January.
First-of-its-Kind Initiative in Central Asia
Anticipated to be the inaugural establishment of its kind in Central Asia, Apple's prospective representative office in Kazakhstan signifies a significant stride towards enhancing the company's regional presence. Previously, Apple maintained an office in Moscow, Russia, which was subsequently closed, leading to a halt in product supplies.
In addition to negotiations with Apple, Kazakhstan is engaged in dialogues with other prominent technology corporations such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. These discussions are part of Kazakhstan's broader efforts to advance an ambitious supercomputer project, sanctioned by President Tokayev, aimed at fostering technological innovation and digital infrastructure development within the country.
Earlier, it was reported that the European Commission has imposed a fine of over €1.8 bn on tech giant Apple for alleged antitrust violations related to its App Store practices. The Commission found that Apple abused its dominant position in the market for distributing music streaming apps to iPhone and iPad users within the European Economic Area (EEA).
