The 300th anniversary of the great Turkmen poet and thinker Makhtumkuli Fraghi will be widely celebrated in Uzbekistan, according to a decree by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
"There is no home in our country where the poems of the classical poet and songs created on their basis are not heard, and perhaps there is no Uzbek who would not know them. Over the past centuries, Makhtumkuli has become a poet of his own for our people. His poems with deep philosophy, folk spirit, high artistry, which inspired bakhshis and hafiz, poets and storytellers, always sound on our stages, continue to live in the heart of the people," the document published by the presidential press service said.
Uzbekistan honours Makhtumkuli's legacy. One of the central streets of Tashkent is named in his honour, and a bas-relief of him was installed there in 2017. The Turkmen classicist once studied at the famous Shergazikhan madrassah in Khiva and considered Alisher Navoi his mentor.
"At present, when a new stage has begun in the history of relations of friendship and good-neighbourliness between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, the immortal artistic heritage of Makhtumkuli Fraghi acquires even more importance for our peoples."
Special events include the publication of Selected Works; the production of a feature film in co-operation with Turkmenistan's cinematographers; the staging of a play; a national recitation competition; and an international conference on the role of Makhtumkuli's work in Uzbek culture in Khiva.
The Academy of Arts was instructed to organise an exhibition glorifying "the bonds of friendship and brotherhood between the Uzbek and Turkmen peoples" and to hold a creative evening at the Alisher Navoi State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of Uzbekistan.
