A delegation from the Turkmendenizderyayollary (Turkmen Sea and River Routes) Agency discussed in Iran the establishment of a feeder connection between the Caspian ports of Turkmenbashi and Amirabad. Iran was represented by representatives of the Mazendaran provincial administration and port infrastructure.
Turkmenistan's maritime administration said in a statement that the two sides plan to develop cooperation in international trade, which will strengthen the position of the two ports in transport corridors.
The "Agreement on Fraternal Sea Ports between Turkmenbashi International Sea Port and Amirabad Port Special Economic Zone" is expected to be signed in the near future.
The port of Turkmenbashi began operations in 2018. The $1.5bn project was implemented by Gap Inşaat (Turkey).
The total capacity of the port, excluding oil products, is 17mn tonnes of various cargoes per year. Four terminals are located on an area of more than 150 hectares: general cargo, containers, bulk cargo and car ferries.
The new infrastructure has created opportunities to send cargo along the Silk Road from Asia and the Pacific to Europe via ports in Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran.
